It's not every day you see candy designed to taste like char-broiled chicken.

But such is the dedication to roasted pollo with the Berrelleza family, led by Alejandra and Armando, who just opened El Pollo Rey Express restaurant on the uphill side of Broadway Avenue/Obama Way in Seaside (at 1188 Broadway).

The rich and savory smoke from the large grill loaded with full chickens gets saliva glands going.

Armando mans the grill after growing up in the family's chicken restaurant in Los Mochis in the Sinaloa region of Mexico.

The decor, like the menu, is simple and colorful.

Whole chicken adobado runs $15.99 and includes salsa, onions and tortillas.

Two side orders like rice, beans or frijoles charros—a bean soup with bacon and bits of hot dog—run an additional $3. (Or go $2-$2.25 a la carte).

A half chicken goes for $7.99 or $10.99 with sides. El Rey also does cactus salads ($2.25) and big servings of guacamole ($4.50).

The key item to observe on the menu, though, might be "100 percent estilo Sinaloa," or 100-percent Sinaloa style.

Hours are 10am-8pm daily and it's a cash-only operation to start.
