Jeff Moser

Jeff Moser appears in Monterey County Superior Court on Tuesday.

The Carmel man who slammed into Tractor Pete’s tractor last week and caused a woman to fly out of her seat and onto Carmel Valley Road has been charged with several felonies, including drunken driving and causing great bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon that was not a firearm.

Jeffrey Moser showed up in court Tuesday afternoon, clad in a suit and tie, and pleaded not guilty to all counts. He is currently out of custody after posting a $30,000 bail bond.

According to prosecutors, an hour and a half after the crash, Moser had a blood alcohol level of .16, which is double the legal limit. Because of this detail, the court ordered Moser to not have “any contact” with alcohol until the case is resolved. That means not going into bars, no bringing wine as a gift to holiday parties and no holding champagne glasses to cheers and bring in the New Year.

Moser, who had no criminal record in Monterey County, is expected to be back in court on Dec. 13 to set a date for his preliminary hearing, where the facts of the case will be laid out and it will be determined if evidence is sufficient to take him to trial.

Before Moser has a chance to present his case in court, a video circulating on the web—one that has garnered more than 11,000 views—shows what happened. A group of people were riding in the slow-paced tractor in Carmel Valley and inside a pickup truck, Moser appears to be yelling and honking at Tractor Pete. Suddenly, he smashes into the tractor. Screams can be heard and then a woman, who was riding in the front of the tractor, can be seen lying on the street in shock.

Moser then appears to be apologetic yet unable to explain why he did what he did.
