Pairing Up

Owner Denis Boaro, Chef Adolfo Barragan and Federico Frangiamore, a manager at Basil.

Denis Boaro announced on Facebook late Thursday night that he was closing Basil Seasonal Dining in Carmel after more than two decades of serving Italian regional favorites.

Boaro cited current economic uncertainties and rising costs for the decision. Full service restaurants are seeing a decline in traffic because of inflation and higher prices, and Boaro notes a “significant decline” in the number of patrons in recent months.

“Despite my best efforts, I am no longer able to continue operating,” he said in the post.

In the fall of 2024, Boaro revised the menu, turning its focus to the flavors and wines of Veneto. He was known to host fundraising dinners to benefit local nonprofits.

The longtime restaurateur, who also was part owner of the Seaside favorite Gusto, thanked Basil’s regulars, as well as the staff.

“You are the heart of what made Basil special.”

A call to Boaro had not been returned at the time of this posting.
