scary laundry

Do you prefer your laundry to be boring or terrifying? Your call. Sudz Cyber Laundry in Pacific Grove is featuring Halloween decorations created by students from Youth Arts Collective.

Are you forced to cease your Halloween festivities due to lack of clean pumpkin socks and clean pumpkin underwear? Fear not, you can wash your sheets and fold your towels while being accompanied by a small army of demons that starts with the two little girls from The Shining and ends with a man eating his own hand.

It's not the first time the owners of Sudz Cyber Laundry in Pacific Grove have decorated the Monterey County Best Of Readers' Poll-winning laundromat for Halloween, according to Loni McCallum, who owns the place with her husband Kevin McCallum. The laundromat opened 17 years ago and the last dozen have featured a Halloween display.

"This year we had six kids from [Youth Arts Collective]," Loni says. "They were amazing and the effect is very different from our usual Halloween display."

The young artists spent a few days decorating the laundromat with their arts and craft scary creatures, some 7 feet tall, including a werewolf in skinny jeans.

The students were fed during work and rewarded with some cash and laundry gift cards. They conjured requisite witches, ghosts, bats and jack-o-lanterns, including 20-25 electronic animated figures such as a 6-foot alien, skeletons, and the killer doll Chucky.

The laundromat will be part of the upcoming 11th annual downtown P.G. trick-or treating event, which takes place from 10am-2pm Saturday, Oct. 28, when downtown businesses hand out candy and other goodies to costumed children.

Two little girls from The Shining are waiting for you to be done with this washing machine at Sudz Cyber Laundry.

One doesn’t have to attend the Oct. 28 event to see Sudz in all its Halloween glory. The laundry is open from 8am-8 pm daily and the decorations will be up until a few days after Halloween.

And, if you want to do your laundry, but avoid the scary decorations, McCallum says she’s instituted a “transfer program” in which you can put your laundry in the washer, pay a couple of bucks depending on the size of the load, go run your errands and Sudz staff will put the load in a dryer and fold it when done for you to pick up. Nothing scary there.

Sudz Cyber Laundry is located at 709 Lighthouse Ave. in Pacific Grove.
