The first-ever Worlds Away festival, scheduled for Oct. 12 at the Monterey Fairgrounds, promises musical travel through different worlds in time and space. While these promises are, presumably, metaphorical, the big-name artists from the world of electronic music are indeed real.
The duo The Chainsmokers will headline the day. Other performances include Tiësto, Lauv, R3hHAB, Sam Feldt, Lost Kings and Ayokay.
Fans took to social media in recent days to try to figure out if the celebrity lineup was legit. "I’m from the 831 and find it hard to believe we will be having these big names at the fairgrounds," one person posted on Reddit. "I’m all for it though."
It is indeed legit, and tickets go on sale tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 16, at 10am. (General admission tickets start at $150, with various VIP packages available.)
The Dutch DJ Tiësto will play at the Worlds Away at Monterey Fairgrounds.
The event promises to offer more than music, but also to incorporate a light show at dusk and other elements for a multi-sensory experience. "We’re creating an immersive environment, where artists and technologists will converge to create a carnival of avant-garde experiences that blend music, art, and technology," according to promotional materials. Festival-goers will be known as "travelers."
The festival producer is Pendulum, and the creative director is the Los Angeles-based design firm Vita Motus, which has led art installations at events like Coachella the Super Bowl halftime show.
Worlds Away brings a different kind of programming to the Fairgrounds on the same weekend that was originally scheduled to host Rebels & Renegades, a country/Americana festival, for the third time. The local team behind Good Vibez, which also produces the Cali Roots festival, announced last spring they would not bring back Rebels & Renegades for a third year. Good Vibez has been hired to produce Worlds Away.
In a statement, festival founder Ro Sahebi suggested this is the first of more to come: “This first event is just a taste of what we have planned for the future."
