Medquick pharmacy opens in Greenfield and plans expansion to King City.

Ever since the pharmacy chain Rite Aid closed its last remaining stores, including in Greenfield, throughout the United States in the summer of 2025, after filing for bankruptcy, people have had to go to other pharmacies including CVS Pharmacy or small, local pharmacies to get their medication.

For smaller towns where there is only one pharmacy, it may force residents to travel a farther distance to get the prescriptions they need.

“So these little towns are really impacted by the closure of these big stores,” says Lockwood resident Susan Raycraft, who travels to King City to get medication for her husband, who has prostate cancer.

Residents in South Monterey County have had RYSA Pharmacy in King City, which has been open for eight years; the Gonzales RX Pharmacy; the Soledad Pharmacy and Wellness Center, including the only CVS Pharmacy in the area; and the Greenfield Pharmacy, which opened in February of last year.

“I started going to [RYSA pharmacy] right before Rite Aid closed,” Raycraft adds. “And right from the first experience I had with RYSA was great service, friendly people and they wanted to be aware of the reasons you were using their services.”

Greenfield recently added another pharmacy right next to the old location of Rite Aid—Medquick. The business is located at the Santa Lucia Square Shopping Center.

Medquick opened on June 1, according to the store's CEO, Abdul Mosad. The 1,800-square-foot building is located at 634 Walnut Aven. (Mosad lives in Salinas, but is familiar with Greenfield as he used to work as a pharmacist at the Rite Aid.)

“We are seeing growth on a daily basis from existing customers in Greenfield and also customers who were going all the way to Soledad to the CVS," Mosad says. “We are looking for patients to return to their roots, which is Greenfield.”

The CVS Pharmacy in Soledad receives about 7,100 customers a week, according to the manager Anthony Nguyen.

“We see people from all over South Monterey County come,” Nguyen says.

Medquick plans to expand to King City. “We’re just waiting for the State Board of California which governs the licensure,” Mosad says.

Mee Memorial Hospital has sent some patients from the ER to Medquick pharmacy on weekends, according to Mosad.

“There would be many advantages to having another pharmacy in King City, including reduced wait times, greater reliability and local access and support for our aging population and community at large,” King City Mayor Mike LeBarre says.

Medquick is open 9am-6pm Monday-Friday and 9am-2pm Saturdays.
