The local cowgirls and cowboys will be ready to ride again this Thursday, July 16, as they kick off the California Rodeo Salinas with the traditional Horse Parade.

The tradition dates back to 1911, when about 100 folks rode on horseback to watch the first local rodeo, which was then called the Wild West Show. Since then the rodeo has become a world-class event, but the popular horse parade has kept the original spirit.

This year, the Sheriff’s mounted Posse is expected to show up, as well as several riding groups, competitors, color guards, Escaramuzas and Charro groups, as well as drill teams and senior riders.

According to the California Rodeo Salinas website, “the parade will travel to the Rodeo Grounds on Thursday and Friday from East Alisal Street. The Saturday and Sunday traditional horse parades still travel from Salinas City Center (formerly Old Town Salinas) to the Rodeo Grounds.”

If you want to see the parade, you can find the directions and times here.
