The County of Monterey has been partnering with Arts Council for Monterey County in various ways.
A good example are regular Arts4MC exhibits in county buildings, starting with the Monterey County Government Center Administration Building, 168 W. Alisal St., Salinas, where at the moment 59 pieces by 32 artists are displayed across three floors—open to the public 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. An opening reception is scheduled for 4-5pm Tuesday, June 16. The pieces will remain on display through 2026.
True, not everybody can afford or have the time to go to a museum or a gallery, said Jacquie Atchison, executive director of the Arts Council for Monterey County in a news briefing on Wednesday, June 10. Art in government buildings “creates opportunity for engagement,” she said. “It supports local artists and demonstrates the county’s commitment for a creative economy.”
She mentioned two other pieces in the government center—two murals, one by Salinas artist Jose Ortiz, the other by La Neta Murals. Other than those two massive pieces, art rotates in the county’s main building.
In addition, on Tuesday, June 23, a large art exhibit opens (opening reception 4-5pm) at the Monterey County Health Department, 1270 Natividad Road, Salinas. A total of 41 art pieces (15 adult and 17 youth artists) will be distributed throughout the building.
"Everybody is welcome,” Atchison said.
