Sometimes success is achieved through a series of fortunate events. For Brett Whales and Erin Reimer, their story is no exception. Brophy’s owners and companions Brett Whales and Erin Reimer met in 2008 at Brophy’s during a televised showing of the Super Bowl. After making a friendly wager on the game (that Erin won) Brett obligingly took her to dinner as per the agreement. Like a match igniting a flame, that was the start of things to come.

Last year, Carmel native Brett Wales was bar tending at his favorite watering hole, Brophy’s Tavern, when he learned that the restaurant was for sale. Brett and Erin, with backing from her parents, purchased Brophy’s Tavern in June, 2010. They then brought on Brett’s childhood friend of 20-plus years, awardwinning chef Brian Christensen, as Head Chef. Brophy’s is now the first Gastro Pub in Monterey County.

Erin, who grew up in Monterey, applies her decade of management and community relations experience to Brophy’s while Brett turns the restaurant’s proverbial wheels with his 14 years of restaurant experience.

Since the restaurant’s revitalization, Brophy’s has seen some memorable moments. Graeme McDowell chose to celebrate his 2010 US Open win at Brophy’s Tavern, signing autographs and hanging out with local patrons until the wee hours of the morning. He was the first to sign the Pebble Beach Mural displayed at Brophy’s. Perhaps this is because Brophy’s is not just a local’s favorite, but it’s where the caddies flock.

Philly Cheesesteak

Perfectly peppered, thinly sliced rib-eye gets layered onto soft original Amoroso’s rolls from Philadelphia, then comes the clincher: cheese, including both the provolone and the Cheez Whiz, just like so many soldiers in Jersey and Philly do it (only, true to the great debate, they may or may not add peppers).
