A 23-year-old inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison was stabbed to death early Sunday morning.
Just after midnight, correctional officers saw movement in the cell of Luis Manuel Baladez. They found the 23-year-old inmate lying on his bunk, bleeding from what appeared to be multiple stab wounds, according to a press release from SVSP.
An emergency medical team tried to save Baladez, but he died from his injuries on the scene.
Baladez’s cellmate, 25-year-old Horacio Gonzales, is the main suspect in the murder and has been moved to the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit while authorities investigate.
Baladez has been in prison since September 2013 serving a two-year, eight-month sentence for carrying a concealed weapon. Gonzales has been in prison since February 2014 serving a life sentence for attempted murder.
