Tami Huntsman

Tami Huntsman, the jailed woman accused in the murder of two children and the torture of a girl late last year, is reportedly pregnant.

Huntsman, 39, has been housed in Monterey County Jail since early January. Jail spokesman John Thornburg could not confirm her pregnancy, but said she was taken to Natividad Medical Center for a doctor’s appointment on Monday.

However, an official source who spoke in anonymity, confirmed Huntsman's doctor appointments are consistent with someone who is pregnant, and said rumors about her pregnancy which have been swirling for about a week are true. It remains unclear how far along her pregnancy is, or who impregnated her.

Her reputed 17-year-old boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel, is also suspected in the grisly murders and has been reportedly going out with Huntsman for more than a year. Prosecutors did not file charges against Huntsman alleging statutory rape in their complaint.

Jeremy Dzubay, who is representing Curiel in the case, says he has not independently confirmed Huntsman's pregnancy, but adds it would be an issue to consider as the criminal case continues.

The couple is accused in the killing Delylah and Shaun Tara, ages 3 and 6, respectively, as a result of ongoing physical abuse that started while they resided in their East Salinas home. The bodies of the Tara siblings were found last December stuffed inside a plastic container in a Redding storage unit.

The children were under the care of Huntsman, who was the children’s aunt and informal guardian after the children's mother died and their father jailed. Before the bodies of the children were found, a 9-year-old girl, who was also in the care of Huntsman, was found starved and tortured in Plumas County, where both Curiel and Huntsman were arrested.

Huntsman and Curiel have both plead not guilty to all allegations against them. They last appeared in court Feb. 19 to set a date for their preliminary hearing.

If prosecutors seek the death penalty in the case, Huntsman would be eligible for it, but Curiel would not due to him being a minor when the crime occurred. However, Curiel is being charged as an adult on all counts. Both face life in prison.
