A torrid second round ends with Bhatia and Hisatsune tied at the top of the Pro-Am field.

Akshay Bhatia and Ryo Hisatsune traded blows throughout Friday’s second round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, each refusing to concede the top spot for long. But other golfers were keen to enter the fray on a day when conditions again favored the player.

And at the end of the day, Bhatia and Hisatsune shared the lead at 15-under, with Rickie Fowler and Sam Burns lurking one stroke back.

Hisatsune began the day in sole possession of the lead after besting Burns by a stroke on Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Friday he teed up at the more fickle Spyglass Hill Golf Course. 

But Spyglass welcomed golfers. Among the top eight at the end of the round, only Min Woo Lee and Jake Knapp took on Pebble Beach. Golfers recorded 13 eagles on the undulating holes of Spyglass.

Bhatia’s eagle on 14—part of his front nine as his group started on 10—brought him into the battle for the lead. Steady play on the back nine capped by a birdie put him in a tie with Hisatsune.

“We were trying to hit this chip between four to six feet, and it happened to go in,” Bhatia says of his eagle. “I mean, bogey-free around these golf courses are great.”

Despite the comparative ease of play, Hisatsune found trouble at the turn. Back-to-back bogeys dropped him from the lead—but only temporarily. An eagle on 7 (his 16th) brought him back into contention.

Burns recovered from an early stumble to record a 5-under 67 and remains in the fight heading into the weekend. But Rickie Fowler and Min Woo Lee made impressive charges through the leaderboard, Fowler gaining eight positions on the day and Lee 14.

“I felt like I did a good job keeping things simple,” Fowler explains. “Especially when we get weather like this after we got through some of the rain, this is just a fun part of the world to be in.”

Fowler fired an 8-under 64 at Spyglass thanks to a torrid start. He enters play on Saturday at 14-under in a tie for third with Burns.

Lee recorded a 7-under 65 at Pebble Beach to land 12-under, joining Jacob Bridgeman and Sepp Straka in fifth. An eagle on the 2nd hole helped launch Lee’s run.

“It was not the eagle putt you wanted—downhill left to right—but it was pretty stress free,” he says. “New driver in the bag, new putter in the bag, and they were all cooperating.”

Knapp and Tom Hoge are knotted in eight, at 11-under. Seven golfers are tied for 10th, just five strokes back.

Saturday’s third round and Sunday’s finale will be played at Pebble Beach, professionals only.

For Keith Mitchell, who paired with Travis Kelce and had to field more Taylor Swift questions than he ever had in the past, the weekend means “Business as usual.”

Mitchell is tied for 59th.
