Erik Chalhoub here, bopping to the beat these past few days. The Monterey Jazz Festival concludes its three-day run today, Sept. 29, and the heavy hitters just keep coming.
Twelve-time Grammy Award winner Robert Glasper will be joined by singer-songwriter Yebba tonight at 8:15pm. Even if you’re not familiar with jazz and R&B, you’ve likely heard Glasper’s work—the artist has been involved in many genres and film scores over his career.
Today also features a slate of gospel performances, including that up-and-coming singer Mavis Staples who you probably haven’t heard of. She’s only been inducted into both the Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Fames, performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and named one of the 100 greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone. I’m glad to see the Monterey Jazz Festival give burgeoning artists a place to grow their career.
In all seriousness, Staples’ appearance in Monterey speaks to the prestige of a festival that continues to draw iconic artists who’ve made an indelible mark on the world of music.
In this week’s edition of the Weekly, we dove into some of the highlights of the 67th annual Monterey Jazz Festival, featuring can’t-miss artists.
Speaking of icons, Paul Wilner interviewed jazz legend Stanley Clarke, who performed yesterday, Sept. 28. Agata Popęda spoke with Kyle Eastwood, who’ll be bringing his famous dad Clint’s film scores to life with his Eastwood Symphonic project today, Sept. 29 at 5pm. Japanese pianist Yuko Mabuchi’s high-energy performance is also today, kicking off at 4:30pm.
This year marks a major moment in the history of the festival. It represents the vision of Darin Atwater, who succeeded Tim Jackson as artistic director. Jackson worked on the festival for 33 years, and Atwater is the third person in the organization's nearly seven-decade history to hold this role.
You can read Wilner’s interview with Atwater and learn about his philosophy for the festival as well as his plans for the future.
Who is your must-see artist at this year’s festival?
