Have you started formulating New Year’s resolutions already? There’s a lot of emphasis at this time of year on thinking ahead, planning for what’s to come. But I’d like to suggest we think in the opposite direction for a moment, and look back.
Sara Rubin here, offering up something that has become a tradition at the Weekly at this time of year. The cover of this week’s issue features our 2024 year-in-review, with short summaries of dozens of stories across Monterey County.
The news does not sleep. While everyone in our newsroom is still working sources, developing story ideas and pitching for next week’s paper with ideas that are newsy and of this moment, we make time to look back at the year gone by.
Especially in the fast-moving digital age, I like this exercise as an invitation to pause and reflect and remember. Time feels like it moves at a faster pace than ever; especially in the newsroom, we have already moved on to the next issue by the time an edition of the Weekly hits newsstands, and I can easily forget what week it is. Looking back certainly doesn’t slow down time, but it does help me remember where I’ve been and what I’ve done.
On the news scale, it helps us to remember some of the stories that shaped and will continue to shape our community; many stories featured in our 2024 year-in-review are very much current. Where will the California Office of Health Office of Health Care Affordability go with its direction to minimize increases in hospital prices? Will MST’s SURF! busway project get built? Will the Amberjacks minor league baseball team return to Monterey in 2025?
I can’t answer any of those questions yet, but I expect some developments through the year ahead. As they say, newspapers are writing the first draft of history.
As always, if you have ideas about what belongs in that draft, please reach out. What were the standout stories for you in 2024, and what do you expect to be the biggest stories in 2025?
