Erik Chalhoub here. I frequently walk Cannery Row on the weekends, seeing who’s in town and waiting in the often-overflowing entrance queue to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, visiting Shark Bait Sam and his parrot sidekick Scuttle outside of the Treasure Hunt ride, and stopping by Cannery Row Antique Mall to see if there are any real-life treasures to score.
The walk always ends at San Carlos Beach before I turn around. It’s here where I’ve always thought the building at the corner of Cannery Row and Reeside Avenue was a missed opportunity due to its prime location and large windows.
So I was intrigued to read an article by staff writer Agata Popęda in this week’s edition of the Weekly, introducing a new gallery in the corner space.
Breakwater Collective is a night gallery, meaning you can see it at any time of the day (or night). Framed photography hangs on the walls and is brightly lit, sure to catch the eyes of the numerous daily passersby.
“We tried to make everything lit so each piece is visible from the outside,” gallery co-founder Suzanne Frey told Popęda.
San Carlos Beach is a popular spot for divers to convene, so, appropriately, underwater photography is the subject of Breakwater Collective’s exhibit.
I encourage you to read Popęda’s article before heading out to Cannery Row to witness the gallery yourself, and get a sense of what lurks under the water that’s right behind you.
