Update: California American Water lifted the boil water advisory 11am Nov. 2, after two consecutive samples came back showing no bacterial contamination.
California American Water, along with the State Water Resources Control Board and the Monterey County Health Department, have issued an advisory to boil water in the Carmel Valley Village area.
All residents located from roughly Sleepy Hollow Drive to Los Laureles Lodge are encouraged to boil water for drinking, washing dishes, brushing teeth and rinsing food for at least three minutes before use.
The advisory comes after a truck backed into a valve connecting to the mainline delivering water to Carmel Valley at the recently removed San Clemente Dam on Oct. 31. The broken valve cause a significant leak, causing a drop in water pressure in the pipe supplying village residents with water.
"Whenever pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch we have to issue a boil-water advisory," says Eric Sabolsice, director of operations for Cal Am in Monterey County. "The drop in pressure can create backflow that draws water from unknown sources."
The advisory will likely remain in effect for 48 to 72 hours. Cal Am will have get two consecutive samples showing no bacterial contamination in the water supply before lifting the advisory.
Currently the recommendation to boil water is precautionary, says Sabolsice, as no contamination has been detected.
