A 17-year-old girl was killed Tuesday morning in Salinas by Northridge Mall after being hit by a motorcyclist, who ran a red light at nearly 90 miles per hour, police say.

The girl, whose name has not yet been released was crossing the street shortly after 10:40am, when the motorcyclist struck her. The impact crushed several of her bones and caused her to be thrown into the air and land on her face. She died on her way to Natividad Medical Center, police said.

After the crash, Anthony Bennett, the 29-year-old motorcyclist, tried to run away from the crash. But a couple of residents, who also witnessed the crash, grabbed him and held onto him until police arrived. He too was taken to the hospital to treat some bumps, bruises and a possible concussion.

Bennett was unlicensed in California and had a suspended license in the state of Oregon. Last week, a Salinas police officer said he saw him driving a car recklessly which led to a citation and his vehicle being impounded for a month.

Upon being released from the hospital, Bennet will booked in Monterey County Jail. Police have recommended charges for vehicular manslaughter, hit and run with death, driving without a license, reckless driving causing injury and for driving without insurance.
