Nancy Kotowski

Monterey County Superintendent Dr. Nancy Kotowski speaks at a MPUSD school board meeting, discussing the Monterey County Office of Education's investigation in 2014.

After 11 years serving as the Monterey County Office of Education's elected Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy Kotowski has announced her retirement. She will continue to serve out her third and final term, which ends in January of 2019.

During her time as Superintendent of Schools, Kotowski launched an investigation focusing on transcript alteration at Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, back in 2014.  The investigation found inconsistent grading policies and graduation requirements that effected at least 93 students.

She was also partially credited for improving achievement gaps in her first term in office 2007-2011. A 2012 Grand Jury Report attributed the Monterey County Office of Education’s “high expectations for closing achievement gaps.

In a statement released on Oct. 9, Kotowski says she's given her "very best," but she continues to look forward to the final year that would "complete her [legacy]."

But as Kotowski takes a bow, one of her own team has already thrown her hat in the ring. According to documents from the Monterey County Election Department, Deneen Guss, the current deputy superintendent, has formally filed to run for superintendent of schools.
