Ebola Virus

Created by CDC microbiologist Frederick A. Murphy, this colorized transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals some of the ultrastructural morphology displayed by an Ebola virus virion.

UPDATE Jan. 30: Officials report the test for the Ebola virus has come back negative.

A statement sent out this afternoon by the California Department of Public Health indicates that a patient at the U.C. Medical Center in Sacramento is currently being evaluated for Ebola.

"It is important to note that this patient has not been confirmed for Ebola," writes Dr. Gil Chavez, state epidemiologist and deputy director of CDPH's Center for Infectious Diseases.

"Whenever there is a person displaying symptoms that may be Ebola, who has recently traveled to Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea, certain precautions are taken including isolating the patient, ruling out other infectious diseases, and testing for Ebola if warranted."

Chavez writes that state officials are in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials, and that together they are "ensuring that all protocols are in place to protect the public health and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Nothing more was included in the statement. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
