Recycled Records

Recycled Records on Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.

One of only a handful of music stores in Monterey County is up for sale.

Six years after buying Recycled Records in New Monterey, owner Sean McCann says it’s time for him to move on to be closer to his family in Arizona where his mother lives and his son recently moved.

“Business is decent here,” he says. “(Though) it is a tough grind being a shop owner.”

McCann listed the business for sale on Friday, May 11 and has already had some interest. He hopes to sell by September.

The asking price is $100,000, or best offer.

The shop, which has been a record store since 1975, carries new and used vinyl, CDs, DVDs and a variety of stereo equipment.

“I could pack it up and take it to Arizona, but ’d like to keep it alive for the community. A lot of people grew up coming here and it has a lot of memories for folks,” says McCann. “I get thanked every week from people for keeping up a record store.”

Vinyl is a tangible listening experience for collectors.

“For certain folks who like to engage with the music, it’s great,” says McCann. “You have to take the record out and drop the needle in the groove. And it just sounds better.”

Recycled Records is located at 604 Lighthouse Ave. in Monterey. 375-5454.
