Since mid-December, the region has experienced on-and-off rain. Additional rain and scattered showers are expected from mid-Friday, Dec. 29, to Saturday night.

In between rain storms, waves 20-plus feet high continue pounding the Monterey County coast on Thursday, Dec. 28. Combined with a very high high tide of 5.9 feet at 10:15 Wednesday morning, coastal flooding led to road closures in Pacific Grove.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning along the coast that is in effect until 4pm today.

In Pacific Grove, various coastal locations are closed due to ocean flooding, dangerous waves and storm debris. The areas of Foghorn, Crespi Pond, Acropolis, Asilomar, Otter Point and the Great Tide Pool are closed until further notice. Ocean View Boulevard remains closed between Esplanade Street and Lighthouse Avenue.

In Carmel, Monterey County Public Works officials used hand tools to cut a channel from the Carmel Lagoon to mitigate the potential for flooding. Some flooding is reported on 16th Street near Carmel River Elementary School.

Monterey County Public Works has provided a list of resources for storm preparation, including sand stocks and sandbag distribution locations, a resources directory that includes official websites tracking specific disasters, assistance (food and shelter), transportation, health care and maps showing watersheds from different locations including Elkhorn Slough, the Arroyo Seco River, Pajaro River, Salinas River and more.

Sandbag distribution points are located across the county at local fire stations from King City to Greenfield, Chualar, Carmel Valley, Castroville, Pajaro and more.

In Seaside, sand and sandbags are available at the Fire Department, 1635 Broadway Ave., and the lot by Chili’s restaurant on Canyon Del Rey Boulevard.

In Pacific Grove, they are available behind the Fire Department, 600 Pine Ave.

Residents can also register at A!ert Monterey County to receive emergency alerts from the Department of Emergency Management. Residents can receive alerts via phone (landline and cell phone), text message, and emails.

To receive texts and emails about public safety and emergencies from local law fire departments and law enforcement, people can sign up with Nixle. People can sign up online or by texting their zip code to 888777.
