Pacific Grove City Council Dec. 4, 2024

The Pacific Grove City Council on Dec. 4, 2024, shortly after new and returning members were sworn in. From left to right, councilmembers Paul Walkingstick and Lori McDonnell, Mayor Pro Tempore Joe Amelio, Mayor Nick Smith and councilmembers Chaps Poduri and Tina Rau. They need to fill a position left vacant by Debby Beck.

The seven-member Pacific Grove City Council is shy one councilmember, after Debby Beck resigned her position in November. On Dec. 4 the council approved an application for those interested in serving, due by 5pm, Friday, Jan. 3.

The council will consider all applications at its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and possibly choose a new councilmember that night. Whoever gets the nod will serve until November 2026.

Beck was elected in 2022, narrowly winning a third seat over then-candidate Tina Rau. On Nov. 8, Rau, running for a second time, edged out incumbent Luke Coletti—an ally of Beck's on the council—in the vote count for the Nov. 5 election. Beck resigned shortly after the results were posted.

Beck said in her resignation email she was going to spend more time with family and travel. Her final meeting was Nov. 20.

Rau was sworn into office on Dec. 4, along with two other councilmembers and newly elected Mayor Nick Smith. The other councilmembers were Chaps Poduri, who was reelected for a second term, and newcomer Paul Walkingstick.

That night Councilmember Joe Amelio was elected by the council as the mayor pro tempore, a position previously held by Smith.

Along with Councilmember Lori McDonnell, the six members will have to come to a majority agreement to select a new colleague.

The application is available on the P.G. city website.

C’mon PG, save us the trouble and put Luke back in. He only trailed Tina Ray by a few dozen votes.
