Kampe

A P.G. ordinance prohibits large campaign donations, or any donations from groups. "It means that we are not beholden to special interests, which I think ultimately is for the benefit of the city."

Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Kampe announced this morning he will seek a third consecutive term as mayor of America's Last Hometown.

Kampe says the decision was not automatic, and that before he gave the idea serious thought, he was waiting for the outcome of two things: the fate of Measure X—which allows for a zoning change to convert the American Tin Cannery into a luxury hotel—and the appointment of a new city manager.

With the passing of Measure X April 19, and the appointment of Ben Harvey as city manager the next day, Kampe had a clear idea of the landscape P.G. faces going forward.

"It opened new possibilities for our future. We still have challenges, and the challenges are significant," he says. "Part of why I want to run is to keep a continuity of effort to make sure the city is moving the right direction."

Kampe sees both the American Tin Cannery and the Holman building as "under-utilized" assets, and that revitalizing them is an important step in making P.G more vibrant.

Kampe will face councilmembers Rudy Fischer and Dan Miller in the mayor's race, who Kampe says have both indicated an intention to run.

Miller is terming out of his council seat, while Fischer is in his second year of his four-year term. But because of a city ordinance that goes into effect when a candidate pulls papers to run, Fischer will nonetheless lose his council seat if he doesn't win the mayor's race.

The first day candidates can pull papers is July 18.
