Monterey Regional Airport sees a flight cancellation due to the government shutdown.

Effects of the Trump administration’s announcement to cut 10 percent of air traffic at 40 of the nation’s busiest airports are trickling down to Monterey Regional Airport. One United Airlines flight scheduled for 8:15am tomorrow, Nov. 7 from Los Angeles International Airport to Monterey has been cancelled.

So far this is the only cancellation, but Monterey Regional Airport interim executive director Chris Morello anticipates more to come. 

United Airlines Flight No. 5630 was cancelled due to FAA-mandated airspace restrictions during the government shutdown, according to a notification by United.

“We have not been contacted directly by the airlines but we are beginning to see the impact,” Morello says.

Morello also notes that LAX has approximately 1,500 daily flights, meaning that 150 daily reductions are needed. Approximately 130 daily reductions are expected for flights departing from SFO and 50 daily reductions from flights departing from San Diego, following the 10-percent mandated reduction.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA officials announced the air traffic reductions on Wednesday, Nov. 5, which would start taking effect nationwide tomorrow, Nov. 7 due to the ongoing government shutdown. According to the New York Times, Duffy called the restrictions an attempt to “alleviate the pressure” on air traffic controllers, who have not received a paycheck since mid-October.
