While the presidency and the U.S. Senate flipped from blue to red, Monterey County's elected representatives to state and federal office remain solidly blue, with big victories on Nov. 5 for incumbents, all Democrats.
For positions in the U.S. House of Representatives, Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, beat out Republican challenger Jason Michael Anderson and Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, beat Republican Peter Hernandez.
As of 11am Friday, Nov. 8, with ballots still being counted, Panetta had 70 percent of the vote in District 19 and Lofgren had 63.5 percent in District 18.
For positions in the State Legislature, three incumbents are headed back to Sacramento. State Sen. John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, ran for a newly redrawn district representing the entirety of Monterey County for the first time, and beat out Republican Tony Virrueta with over 66 percent of the vote as of Nov. 8.
In State Assembly District 30, including the coastal portion of Monterey County, Dawn Addis is headed to reelection over Republican challenger Dalila Epperson with 64 percent of the vote as of Nov. 8.
And in Assembly District 29, Robert Rivas, D-Hollister, is leading Republican J.W. Paine with 64.5 percent of the vote. Rivas also now serves as the Speaker of the California Assembly.
In the race for a U.S. Senate seat to represent all of California, Democrat Adam Schiff beat out Republican Steve Garvey. As of Friday, Nov. 8 at 11am, Schiff leads by more than 1.5 million votes, with 57.6 percent of the vote.
