It’s been 24 years since hijacked airliners crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people and scarring the country that continues to define American society in the 21st century.
Locally, cities across Monterey County will commemorate the anniversary of 9/11 with solemn gatherings.
In Soledad, the Soledad High School NJROTC will conduct a presentation at Bill Ramus Park, on the corner of Monterey and Soledad streets, at 8am on Thursday, Sept. 11. The public is invited to join with first responders and city officials in remembrance, along with coffee and pastries.
The Salinas fire and police departments will host a ceremony in front of Salinas City Hall, 200 Lincoln Ave., at 10am. The ceremony will also be livestreamed on the City of Salinas’ Facebook page (@CityofSalinas).
Seaside’s fire and police departments will also gather in remembrance of 9/11 from 10-10:45am on the City Hall lawn, at 440 Harcourt Ave.
