Kristan Maurer

Kristan Maurer, who previously served at Clark County Fire District 6 in Washington, is Marina's new fire chief.

Kristan Maurer is Marina’s new fire chief, filling a role that had been served on an interim basis since the beginning of 2025.

The City of Marina announced the appointment on June 16.

“I am honored to join the Marina community and serve as its next fire chief,” Maurer said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I have believed that strong relationships, professional excellence and community trust are the foundation of an effective fire service organization. I look forward to working alongside Marina’s firefighters, city leaders and residents to continue building a safe and resilient community.”

Maurer started her career with Clark County Fire District 6 in Washington as a firefighter in 1999. She worked her way up the ranks, eventually being appointed chief in 2020. She resigned in 2025, and serves as a fire instructor and on the board of the NW Fire Diversity Council.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in paramedicine from Central Washington University and a Master of Public Administration from Anna Maria College. She is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program and the Los Angeles Fire Department Leadership Academy.

Marina’s previous fire chief, Doug McCoun, retired at the end of 2024. He was brought on as interim fire chief through 2025. Since the beginning of 2026, Division Chief Mark Sweeney has served as interim chief.

Maurer inherits a fire department that is in need of new infrastructure to keep up with the growing city. Its main station is shared with the police department in a 1993-built building that city leaders say (and showed during recent tours) is inadequate to meet the city’s needs.

Marina is planning a utility users tax on the November ballot to fund new facilities.
