Some major road and infrastructure work will be shutting down completely one of the routes into and out of Pacific Grove beginning the first week of June and lasting through early August. Motorists will have to use alternate routes to avoid the closure on David Avenue, between Forest Avenue and Devisadero Street, where P.G. meets Monterey.
The work includes repairing and repaving 18,000 square feet of damaged roadway, replacing a portion of aging sewer line, rebuilding sections of sidewalk, and installing new curbs and gutters.
The project also includes building a new five-foot-wide walking path from the sidewalk on David to the curb ramp on Forest and creating a new eight-foot-wide walking path from David Avenue through Higgins Park and connecting to Morse Drive in P.G.
The city received seven bids and chose Monterey Peninsula Engineering, which had the low bid at $480,560, according to Public Works Director Dan Gho.
For the two months of construction, motorists heading into Monterey will have to use either Prescott Lane—which becomes Prescott Avenue in Monterey—or Forest. It's possible to cut back over from Forest to David in Monterey using Hillcrest Avenue, or one of the other streets heading toward Lighthouse Avenue.
The work comes six months after Pacific Grove officials entered into a consent decree and order in a lawsuit brought by Jackson Sherry, who requires the use of a wheelchair. Sherry pointed out in the suit filed in Monterey County Superior Court last July that the walkways and curbs along Higgins Park and at Forest and David did not meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The consent decree was a compromise and not an admission of liability on the city's part, according to court documents. The work was required to be completed in 2025, and included accessibility work at other sites in the city, including Lovers Point.
