The ex-girlfriend who was stalked, kidnapped and battered by former Salinas City Councilman Jose Castañeda wants nothing more from him.
That was the message delivered by Deputy District Attorney Elaine McCleaf to Judge Carrie Panetta in court on Sept. 21.
Castañeda was back in court for a hearing to determine if he would be ordered to pay financial restitution to his ex-girlfriend, identified in court as Jane Doe. He was convicted in May for the 2015 domestic violence incident, and sentenced on Aug. 22 to eight years in prison.
He has filed notice of his intent to appeal the conviction to the Sixth District Court of Appeal.
Panetta said she would leave the option open for the victim to seek restitution at a later date.
After the hearing Thursday morning, the judge released Castañeda to the custody of the California Department of Corrections to serve his sentence in state prison; until now, he has remained housed in Monterey County Jail.
It was the close to a contentious case during which Panetta clashed with Castañeda's former attorney, James Segall-Gutierrez.
As she sent Castañeda off on Sept. 21, Panetta wished him well: "Good luck to you, Mr. Castañeda."
