It’s a report card worthy of posting on the family fridge.
Three hospitals in Monterey County scored safety grade-A ratings from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit focused on improving the quality and safety of American health care.
Salinas hospitals Natividad Medical Center and Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, as well as Monterey's Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula all received the top scores for spring 2017.
It’s the third year in a row for Natividad and the fifth year for Memorial to receive A grades for improving patient safety, preventing medical errors and minimizing injuries, accidents and infections.
Natividad CEO Dr. Gary Gray said in a statement the recognition show’s the county hospital's “commitment to making safety a priority at our hospital, and to our high standards of care and high patient satisfaction.”
Leapfrog named Natividad a “Top Hospital” in December 2016, one of 11 in the state and the only hospital in Monterey County to receive the honor.
CHOMP improved its score over last year, when it received B’s in both spring and fall of 2016. The hospital had an A rating in the fall of 2015.
The Hospital Safety Grade is a twice-annual assessment of more than 2,600 hospitals across the country. Leapfrog bases its scores on 30 evidence-based patient safety measures of publicly available hospital data.
The local facilities are three of 823 hospitals in the U.S. and of 68 hospitals to receive A’s, making them among the safest hospitals in the nation, according to Leapfrog.
By comparison, while Monterey County’s medical center, Natividad, received an A, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, run by Santa Clara County, got a D this spring, as well as both spring and fall last year, dropping down from C’s in 2015.
Editor's note: This post has been updated to reflect the following correction: Memorial Hospital received an A rating five years in a row, not three years in a row, as previously stated.
