Fred Meurer

Fred Meurer, who served as Monterey's city manager for 27 years until retiring in 2013, may again find himself at the helm of a city.

On Nov. 20, the city council of Sand City will consider bringing on Meurer as interim city administrator; the position has been open since late September when former city administrator Todd Bodem resigned after the city council chose not to renew his contract.

"Meurer was interested, and he knew that we were looking for someone and he wanted to step in and give the city a hand," Mayor Mary Ann Carbone says, adding that she has spent more time in the office and taken on more roles since Bodem's departure.

Meurer says he has already met the council's budget personnel subcommittee about the possibility.

"I’m not going to be so presumptuous, but I would enjoy doing it," Meurer says, adding that he's kept himself busy with several local issues since retiring, and hasn't been reading as many books as he thought he might.

"I'm not bored," he says. "I have a great passion for the issues that face our region…

"There are very few issues of substance that don’t impact all of northern Monterey County," Meurer says, naming water and workforce housing among them. "The tourist industry is having difficult time hiring people because of a lack of housing in all spectrums."

Carbone says the council will consider the matter in open session at the Nov. 20 meeting, and that if hired, she expects Meurer would start immediately.
