The man who has led Montage Health for 25 years as its president and CEO, Dr. Steven Packer, is planning to retire in spring 2025, Montage announced on Monday, June 10.
Packer worked as a pulmonologist before becoming CEO. As a member of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula staff he held a number of leadership positions, including chief of staff.
He was president and CEO of CHOMP, which in 2016 became part of a new nonprofit called Montage Health, which incorporated all of CHOMP's operations, from the hospital and Montage Medical Group.
Some of Packer's accomplishments include expansion of CHOMP to include 120 new rooms, construction of the Carol Hatton Breast Care Center and creation of Montage Medical Group, as well as the county's first Medicare Advantage program, Aspire Health Plan, with Salinas Valley Health.
During his time Montage also opened wellness centers in Marina and Salinas, three MoGo Urgent Care clinics, the Montage Health Foundation and the Ohana campus for a youth mental health program.
"It has been a privilege to serve this wonderful community that my family calls home," Packer said in a press release. "I have been honored to work with such an amazing team of dedicated and skilled physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers and boards of trustees. I am so proud of our collective efforts to provide extraordinary care to our community."
Montage officials said a national search "will be initiated in the coming days."
