As of June 1, there are no more vacant seats on Carmel City Council.
Longtime Carmel-by-the-Sea resident Carolyn Hardy, who has institutional knowledge of politics in Carmel, was unanimously appointed Wednesday to the seat that former councilman Steve Dallas left vacant when he won his bid for mayor.
Hardy has long been outspoken in Carmel politics, and has served on the Community Activities and Cultural Commission, Sunset Cultural Center, the Carmel Residents Association and the Carmel Public Library Foundation. At the time she applied to serve on council, she also asked to be considered for the Planning Commission.
She was one of 11 applicants interviewed by Dallas and Mayor Tempore Carrie Theis. In the end, Dallas and Theis found Hardy was found to be the most qualified candidate, according to a memo they wrote recommending her.
Among the competitors for the seat were Richard Kreitman and Dave Mosley, who both ran for City Council and lost in April.
Now, with the new five-person council in place, the first order of business on June 7 will be to discuss potential changes to the beach fire pilot plan, which could include a dozen city-supplied wood fire rings, and opening up the entire length of Carmel Beach—including north of Tenth Avenue—to fires.

Without the fires, the beach is just for the dogs.
