The body of a missing 29-year-old Marina woman was discovered during a massive search this morning, police said.
Carie "Lulu" Hufford, who was reported missing eight days ago, was found in a thicket of trees and brush on Imjim Parkway, just north of Abrams Drive, said Marina Police Commander Bob Nolan. Though an autopsy hasn't yet been conducted, officials are confident it's the body of the Marina resident.
Officials say Hufford's death appears to be from natural causes—likely accidental—though detectives are continuing to investigate. On Jan. 20 a witness reported seeing a woman matching Hufford's description who appeared to be confused and wearing pajamas.
"We think [Hufford] was disoriented—it was reported she may have the flu," Nolan said. "We believe she was delusional and wandered of the trail, passed out underneath a tree and went to sleep. How she got there we're not exactly sure."
The discovery was due in part to an "overwhelming" community response, stemming from social media posts, Nolan said. Nearly 200 volunteers from cities including Salinas and Castroville showed up to assist searchers from the Marina Office of Emergency Services and a Central Coast search team. The search began at the Marina Fire Station around 10am. Hufford's body was found about 45 minutes later, less than a mile from her home.
Hufford also went by the last name Leetch, from her first marriage, as well as Muñoz, her given name. She was reported missing by her husband David Hufford the morning of Jan. 17. Her husband said she'd left her things, including her cell phone, at home.
Hufford is survived by her 10-year-old daughter, as well as three siblings who all live in the county.
