Last night, sandwiched between a pair of weekend shows at the mother of all music festivals, Coachella, The Pixies performed to about 300 people at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur—a far cry from the tens of thousands they rocked in Indio, Calif. on Saturday.
But that didn't mean they toned it down at all.
From "Bone Machine" to "Ed is Dead" to their unofficial anthem, "Where is My Mind?" (see video below), The Pixies delivered two solid hours of their quintessential brand of quiet-loud-quiet classics—and a stadium-sized light show—under the redwoods.
And they couldn't have found a better "temporary" replacement for Kim Deal than Paz Lenchantin (The Entrance Band, A Perfect Circle). From her enormous smile, it's obvious that she's thrilled to have this opportunity.
Today, Frank Black and crew head to Pioneertown, Calif. for a show at the storied Pappy & Harriets before returning to Coachella for another set.
I have the feeling this won't be the last Monterey County will be hearing from The Pixies.
