Three winners will be invited to read their winning entries onstage Tuesday, Feb. 24 before The Mayhem Poets show.

The Mayhem Poets' educational training operation Slam Chops, based in New York City, provides opportunities for aspiring poets of all ages.

After scoring first place in the Microsoft Idea Wins Challenge in 2006—and a grant for $100,000—The Mayhem Poets have been touring worldwide and collaborating with everyone from hip-hop guru KRS-ONE to renowned violinist Jane Hunt.

The trio's one-of-a-kind, must-be-seen-to-be-believed performance is an intricate hodgepodge of hip-hop, stand-up comedy, theater, improvisation and "gut wrenching truths that leave audiences forever changed."

The New York Times simply called the show "an amazing ride."

At 7pm Tuesday, Feb. 24, the lyrical bigwigs unleash their kaleidoscope of prose at Sunset Center's Studio 105.

If you want to see the show for free, it's as simple as putting six words together.

Starting now, folks have through 5pm Feb. 23, to enter Music Mayhem! A Six-Word Poetry Challenge. The deets:

  • Open to friends/followers of Sunset Center on Facebook or Twitter (open to all ages and geographical locations).
  • Participants tweet/post a 6-word poem about their relationship with music.
  • Entries must include the #sunsetpoets hashtag.
  • Multiple entries accepted as long as each is an original work.
  • Visit the Six-Word Memoirs for inspiration.

Winners—up to three will be selected—will receive a pair of tickets to The Mayhem Poets show ($60 value) and will be invited to read their winning poems onstage before The Mayhem Poets.

I will be announcing the winners before the show (winners will be notified beforehand so they can pick up their tickets.)

Enjoy yourself, and in the spirit of The Beastie Boys: "Let it flow, let yourself go/ Slow and low, that is the tempo."
