Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer heads back to school.

Chad Smith is No. 10 on Spin's 2013 list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music.

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith will be hanging in South Monterey County tomorrow. More specifically, at Mary Chapa Academy in Greenfield.

In addition to being doppelgängers with Will Ferrell, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was recently appointed by President Obama—along with Rachel Goslins—as Executive Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

On behalf of the committee's flagship program, Turnaround Arts, Smith is presenting the school with a gift of instruments, curriculum and teacher training, which he organized to jumpstart the school's new Turnaround Arts-initiated music program.

Turnaround Arts works with local program partners to provide arts education resources to struggling schools across the country, leading to increased attendance, academic achievement and student engagement.

Each Turnaround Arts school receives professional development from experts in the field and a range of resources provided by national partners to bolster student learning and build school community, including art supplies from Crayola, and in this case, musical instruments from the National Association of Music Merchants.

Mary Chapa Academy is scoring a huge array of instruments, including Pearl drum kits from Little Kids Rock and Pearl; an entire class worth of Fender acoustic guitars, a pair of Fender Strat packs and a Fender bass pack from Little Kids Rock; Sabian is providing cymbals and Sabian and Gon Bops are hooking up bongos, cowbells and other percussive instruments; Remo is providing its pre-k percussion line and drum heads for all the drums.

To top it off, Vater is gifting Smith's custom drum sticks and practice pads along with music books from Hal Leonard.

"Research shows high quality arts education can be used as an effective tool to enrich student learning, not only in music class, but in the core content areas as well,” says Malissa Feruzzi Shriver, Executive Director of Turnaround Arts California.

If the program works as planned, Smith's appearance and words of encouragement, paired with all the shiny new equipment, will result in a bunch of kids who are eager to get to school.

It all goes down 1pm Thursday, Nov. 13 at Mary Chapa Academy, 490 El Camino Real, Greenfield.

Smith isn't a stranger to Monterey County: In 2011, he and the Chili Peppers performed a secret show at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur—the band is frequently in Big Sur since their bassist, Flea, has a house close to Pfeiffer Beach.
