A Mundos sandwich found its way into my life yesterday, which made me think of its menu mate, the Monster, which made me think of the most ridiculously oversized sandwiches in the area, which made me think of this list.
Here's a look at the original report. Each locally owned place is flourishing, and Mundos has since added a third location on Webster in downtown Monterey.
There's the master cleansing, planking, yoga practicing little angel on one shoulder, and all-you-can-eat-buffet, milkshake-slurping, burger lover on the other.
This list, of the very, very biggest sandwiches in Monterey County, is dedicated to latter.
In order, from biggest to still ridiculously big:
1 • The Monster at new Mundos 2 in Marina (236-1433) seems destined to outgrow the mammoth sandwiches of the original Mundos on Fremont in Monterey all by itself, with a massive wad of chicken, chorizo, tri-tip, bacon and ham held together by marinara sauce and melting mozzarella cheese.
2 • The Bomber at Mal’s Market (394-1881) is the next heaviest meeting of meat, bread and spread around. Order it the way Mal’s originally crafted it, with a pound and a half of roast beef, turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss, onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato, piled on a soft roll slathered lovingly with garlic and jalapeño spreads, mustard and mayo.
3 • Crispy and meaty are hallmarks of the Cuban at La Tortuga (899-8429), where a breaded beef cutlet is topped with generous slices of roast pork and chunks of grilled sausage on a toasted bolillo roll. Avocado, tomato and spicy slices of pickled jalapeño push this one over the top. And into our clogged hearts.
4 • The Supercharger at the vintage auto-themed Bakery Station (783-1140) gasses eager eaters up with a house-made, fresh-baked ciabatta roll piled with roast beef, bacon, turkey, ham, salami, pepperoncini, tomatoes, red onions, gouda and chipotle aioli. Wide load.
5 • Sing it with me now: “Because Randy’s Sandwich Shop (375-9161) has a way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a.” Which, combined with roast beef, ham, turkey, pastrami, salami and American, Swiss and Jack cheeses, then topped with pickles, peppers, lettuce and mayo, is what you’ll find on this beloved institution’s Jaws 2 sandwich.
6 • Jersey’s Original Subs (899-7677) has been delivering big in little Sand City for 20 years. The Jersey Original is its biggest, with provolone, ham, capocolla, pepperoni, salami, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, a mayo-mustard blend, pepperoncinis, oil and vinegar, salt, pepper and oregano. In the passenger seat, enough to qualify you for the carpool lane.
7 • Pick any of the sandwiches at Compagno’s Market and Deli (375-5987) and it’ll be absurdly scaled—plenty enough for two—whether it’s the Air Force Special turkey breast with Philly cream cheese and cranberry sauce or the reigning people’s choice #27, a thick stack of juicy breaded chicken breast, bacon, avocado and cheese. This would rank higher on sheer size, but doesn't carry the ridiculous diversity of meats the others do.
