Segovia's exterior

The New Monterey bar is open again after a remodel.

Segovia’s has reopened after a delicate facelift.

The flooring is new, as are the chairs and tables. The walls have been repainted and other items—like the ATM, necessary in the plastic-free cocktail dive—have been updated.

But more importantly, says Brandon Segovia, “The structure and ambience are the same.”

The storied bar, opened by Rose and Laurence “Al” Segovia in 1937 and holder of perhaps the oldest liquor license in Monterey County, needed the touch-up. “It morphed into a hell of a project, because I have a full-time job,” Segovia explains, adding that the focus was to remain true to the heritage of the space. He credits Tavo Sandoval for helping complete the job more than a year after closing the doors of the New Monterey establishment on Lighthouse Avenue.

“If it weren’t for him, there would be even more delays,” Segovia adds of Sandoval.

Segovia is the grandson of Larry Segovia, who ran the bar for decades. Larry died on Oct. 2, 2014. Just before officially opening, Brandon honored the Monterey legend by hosting a soft opening on Oct. 2, 2025.

“My grandfather was my hero,” says Segovia, who has taken over operation of the family business. “It’s an honor and a privilege."

Segovia’s is now open from 2pm to 2am seven days a week. It's located at 650 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey.
