Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson is no stranger to the area, and was one of the many performers to take to the stage at Monterey Pop.

From the Soberanes Fire to the Mud Creek slide and the closure of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in the past year—plus the more gradual increase of bigger and more tour buses—the coast of Big Sur hasn't been the same place for locals for a long time.

But for those reminiscing about the Big Sur that once was, acoustic folk singer-songwriter and native Hawaiian Jack Johnson released a music video Dec. 18 to go along with his song "Big Sur."

The upbeat song goes alongside stitched time-lapsed images along Big Sur's Highway 1. Those familiar with the coastline will see the happily grazing cows across the road from Palo Colorado, and the so-called "door" at Pfeiffer Beach.

The video also shows a couple of currently illegal activities, like starting bonfires next to some dry beach shrubs, what looks like car-camping on the roadside and off-roading on closed dirt roads.

Nonetheless, it's feel-good stuff and part of Johnson's seventh studio album All The Light Above It Too, which was released in September of this year.

"Behind the wheel against the road next to you / the Central Coast," Johnson sings. "The central thought within my mind / is how to stay within these lines."
