Bestselling writer Alka Joshi of Pacific Grove has a new book for us. The fourth part of her Jaipur series, Six Days In Bombay was published April 15 and on Tuesday, April 29 there is a book launch in Monterey.
What to expect? Another adventure of a passionate and ambitious woman challenging her times and familiar environments, while navigating her romantic and family relations. No more, no less, and that means hitting the spot for millions of readers. This time it is a story of young painter Mira Novak, a character based on the Indian painter of Hungarian origins Amrita Sher-Gil who lived in the early 20th century.
In addition to her works—never really recognized despite being at the core of the modern Indian art, combining traditional Indian painting with impressionism, and more—Amrita Sher-Gil’s death should have attracted more attention. History didn’t register the cause of her death at the young age of 28; we only know she experienced a coma.
Despite the title, the novel spans through much more space and time than just six days in Bombay. Prepare for a wild and emotional ride around the globe.
Once again, Joshi reminds us: there’s never enough female storytelling out there, and it will be a long time before the space is filled. She herself does it very well and works in the memory of her mother and millions of women who never had a chance to show themselves in front of the world.
Millions of women around the world are indeed responding to Joshi’s stories that combine detailed and live descriptions and emotionally engaging narrative.
6-8pm Tuesday, April 29. Alka Joshi's Six Days In Bombay Book Launch. Santa Catalina School, 1500 Mark Thomas Drive, Monterey. Tickets and information. Six Days In Bombay can be purchased in local bookstores and online.
