Monterey Police Rescue 48 Animals, Investigate Possible Animal Cruelty

The good news is 48 animals are free from a life of confinement in a house filled with piles of garbage and their own excrement.

The bad news is 48 animals were kept locked inside a house filled with up to three feet of garbage, feces and urine by a human being in the first place.

After a report came in to the Monterey Police Department of a car that appeared to have been vandalized, a routine follow-up with the owner led officers into a serious animal cruelty investigation.

First responders noted animal feces and garbage in a car that looked to be tampered with and soon tracked down the owner at the 1200 block of First Street in Monterey late Sunday night. As they approached the residence the same foul odor that emanated from the car was obvious at the residence.

The house was filled with a significant amount of trash, miscellaneous items, animal feces and urine, with no functioning bathroom or kitchen. A City of Monterey Building Inspector was called in and found the home to be uninhabitable.

The SPCA for Monterey County seized 17 cats, 24 dogs and 7 puppies all suffering from flea infestations, eye, dental and skin infections as well as malnutrition.

To help these rescue animals the SPCA is asking for donations—which can be made at SPCAmc.org/donate—and professional groomers to donate their time to help clean the animals up.

The SPCA also strongly encourages anyone who witnesses animal cruelty to visit spcamc.org and report these crimes.
