Seaside police have had a grim and busy 24 hours, as they investigate the shooting death of one man and the shooting of another—the second act possibly a retaliation against last night’s killing.

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, officers  arrived to Shawnee Court, near the 1700 block of San Pablo Avenue, after reports of gunshots heard in the area. They found a 35-year-old man who had been shot multiple times in the back. He was taken to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, but died from his injuries.

Later on Wednesday, just before 5:30pm, police arrived to reports of a fight near Food Corner Market at the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Noche Buena Street. Witnesses also reported hearing multiple gunshots. Seaside Police Commander Chris Veloz says officers found a 20-year-old man shot multiple times. He was flown by medical helicopter to a Bay Area hospital. Multiple witnesses told police they saw several men running from the area.

“These kids need to stop this shit,” said one woman, who asked to remain anonymous, while waiting with several dozen people as the helicopter landed in a field near the shooting scene. She said her daughter’s boyfriend was the victim of Wednesday morning’s killing.

Veloz says he is unsure if either shootings were gang-related.
