After the rain was over, the effects of an early winter storm still lingered on Monday, Oct. 25 in the ocean. Tourists and locals enjoyed a sunny afternoon wave watching in Pacific Grove.
The storm brought much-needed rain to the region, with 2 inches in Monterey, 1.4 inches in Pacific Grove, and 5 inches in Big Sur—with 10 inches and more on some high peaks in the Santa Lucias—although it also brought damage to other regions of California, with reports of flooding and mudslides.
On Monday along the Pacific Grove coastline, large, unpredictable waves created put on a show for those who stopped and watched while walking near Lovers Point.
According to the National Weather Service, "A large west to northwest swell remains a concern today [Tuesday, Oct. 26]. Although swell heights and periods will gradually diminish today, seas will be high enough to result in hazardous seas conditions particularly for smaller vessels."
National Weather Services officials cautioned that due to the early arrival of large waves from Oct. 24-25, wave energy could be higher than normal; beach topography changes through the season, generally becoming steeper. "Many beaches are still transitioning from their summer beach profiles and lack the features and steepness to resist large wave run-up on coasts," according to an advisory issued by the National Weather Service on Oct. 23. "This means that more of this wave energy will have a chance to move onto the beach and overtake individuals."
