Matt Mogensen

Matt Mogensen, who served as Marina's assistant city manager from 2018-2024, is recommended to be hired as city manager.

After a two-year stint a few cities over, Marina resident Matt Mogensen is slated to return to a job working for his city’s government, this time in its top spot.

Mogensen, who is currently Pacific Grove’s city manager, is close to becoming Marina’s next city manager to replace the retiring Layne Long. A committee of Mayor Bruce Delgado and Councilmember Kathy Biala recommend the council approve Mogensen’s employment on Tuesday, July 7.

Mogensen served as Marina’s assistant city manager from 2018-2024. He was hired as Pacific Grove’s city manager in 2024.

Prior to his time on the Monterey Peninsula, he worked for the City of Fountain Valley starting in 2008, first as an assistant to the city manager and then as the city's planning and building director from 2015-2018.

He earned a master’s degree in public administration from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Mogensen’s base salary will be $301,900, in addition to a benefits package, according to the proposed contract.

Long, who served as Marina’s city manager since 2013, announced his retirement in February. A nationwide search to fill the position netted 55 applicants, according to a city staff report.

Long retires on July 17, and Mogensen is scheduled to begin his position in late August if his contract is approved. In the meantime, the council on July 7 will also consider appointing Assistant City Manager Courtney Lindberg as interim city manager.

The Pacific Grove City Council will discuss the process to replace Mogensen at a future meeting.
