Marshall T. Fulbright III is set to remain as superintendent/president of Monterey Peninsula College for another two years to 2028, with an option for a third year, the MPC Governing Board voted 5-0 on Wednesday, Jan. 28. It's another sign of greater harmony on what was previously a fractured board.
Fulbright stepped into the job as the college's 12th leader in July 2023, during a time that board members bickered with each other on a regular basis.
Two board members were replaced in 2024: Debbie Anthony lost her reelection bid to former Chabot College president Celia Barberena, currently chair of the board; incumbent Loren Steck chose not to run for reelection and was replaced by Anita Crawley.
Since then, board members have been working together more cooperatively and make progress on numerous initiatives.
Board member and former chair Yuri Anderson, before passing the gavel to Barberena in December, noted a long list of accomplishments in 2025 that included updating the college's mission, vision and values plan, adopting a long-range strategic plan, approving a new student equity plan, adopting a balanced budget of more than $58 million, among others.
Fulbright's amended contract extends his term from June 30, 2026 to June 30, 2028. If his performance review for the 2026-2027 academic year is satisfactory, it could be extended to June 30, 2029. His number of vacation days allowed increased from 22 to 27 days.
The last available data for his salary in 2024 showed he was making just over $300,000 a year in salary. Total pay and benefits came to just under $397,000.
The new amendment to his contract passed unanimously on Jan. 28, with no public or board comments before the vote.
