If you're going to grow pot, you probably shouldn't do it at an army base.
According to a release from the Fort Hunter Liggett Public Affairs Office, military officials eradicated 5,523 marijuana plants growing at the base July 30, which they estimate have a street value of $16.5 million.
The plants were spotted earlier in the month by U.S. Forest Service agents carrying out routine aerial surveys in a helicopter. According the release, "officials say that every year crops are getting larger."
This is largest grow ever eradicated at the base, which has several remote areas difficult to patrol within its 165,000-plus acres.
Aside from being a win for law enforcement, FHL Conservation Programs Manager Liz Clark says it's also a win for the environment.
"The chemicals used by these growers are long lasting, they affect native plants, and they contaminate soils and water," Clark says in the release. "This leads to negative effects on our ecosystem and wildlife."
