Big gusts of wind accompanied by heavy rain just before the sun rose took out power to much of the Monterey Peninsula on Saturday, Dec. 14. Trees, branches and fences were down in many neighborhoods and traffic lights were flashing due to outages. A flood watch is in place for the Carmel River Lagoon area until 4am Sunday.

As of 10:45am, Saturday, over 38,000 PG&E customers were without power, a little over 18 percent of all customers in Monterey County, according to PowerOutage.us.

The PG&E outage map gave no estimate of when power would return. Crews were seen working around Pacific Grove and nearby areas throughout the morning.

An “intense band of rain and wind” made its way across the region in the early hours of the day, according to the National Weather Service online forecast discussion. Rainfall totals were expected to range between 1-3 inches in the mountain areas, with totals of less than an inch in the Southern Monterey Bay region and inland regions.

The intense band of wind and rain is expected to be joined by a surface level low pressure system off the coast in the late morning. Strong winds and possible thunderstorms are forecast for that period, with showers continuing off and on throughout the day.
