Carmel Planning Commission Passes Flanders Mansion to City Council

To lease or to sell? That's the question that's been a source of divisiveness and litigation in Carmel for years as the city grapples with how to best offload an imposing English Tudor revival with sprawling grounds and views of Point Lobos and Monastery Beach.

The Planning Commission voted 4-1 Thursday to approve the possible sale of Flanders Mansion as compatible with the city's General Plan. That's just one of several hurdles that would need to be crossed if City Council decides to go with the sale option.

Last month, the Planning Commission recommended a lease as preferable option to selling the mansion. The city has received two proposals for a "guest curatorship," in which someone would rent the place and keep up the deteriorating building.

The city was ordered by the Sixth District Court of Appeal to amend its environmental impact report on selling the mansion. City Council is slated to consider the revised report tomorrow.
