Ari Shapiro with Pink Martini PC_Sarina Solem

NPR's Ari Shapiro joins Pink Martini All-Stars present: A Season of Stars tour.

The background of band Pink Martini's website is light green, which is no accident. The color symbolizes harmony and balance, which the genre-and-language-hopping band hope to capture.

Pink Martini rolls local politics, the perfect cocktail and harmony all into one fantastic band you’d think was from the 1960s. Pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale originally had aspirations of running for elected office, but was bored by all of the music at the events and high-brow parties he attended. So like any natural leader would, he did something about it. Thus, the multilingual, dozen-piece band was born.

They return to Monterey to perform at the Golden State Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 4, this time with some familiar faces and songs from the past.

“This is a new show and tour,” Lauderdale says. “All three of the [extra] singers have sung with Pink Martini as guest vocalists off and on for years.”

The band sings in nearly 30 languages, with their 1997 French international hit “Sympathetique” topping out as most popular on Apple Music now. “Audiences can expect songs in French, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Ladino, Italian, English, Japanese and more," Lauderdale explains. “We never have an exact set list before the show."

Their holiday season show promises to be glittered with a unique brand of catchy classic pop, big band sound and Hollywood glamour. This time, it will be hosted by NPP's Ari Shapiro, singer Edna Vazquez, and America’s Got Talent finalist Jimmie Herrod, who are expected to join in the ensemble as well. Pink Martini got their start performing at fundraisers for causes like libraries, public parks and public broadcasting, but for Lauderdale, returning to the Golden State Theatre is lovely. “It’s a nice place to kick off our December tour,” he says.

Pink Martini performs 8pm Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey. All ages. $71-$111. (831) 649-1070, goldenstatetheatre.com.
